Omega-3 is one of the most valuable nutrients we can take for our health. There are many health benefits to consuming it. This includes reducing anxiety and depression, improved eye health, improved heart-health, reduction of ADHD in children, reduction of symptoms of metabolic syndrome, reduction in inflammation, fighting mental-health issues such as Alzheimers, prevention of cancer, and more.

Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated fatty acids or PUFAs. As a mammal, humans are unable to synthesize the essential omega-3 fatty acid ALA and can only obtain it through diet.

The problem is most people in western countries consume far too much omega-6 compared to omega-3. You see, in order to be optimally healthy, many health experts recommend a ratio of 4:1 for omega-6 to omega-3. Some even say a 1:1 ratio is ideal.

Currently, the average person consumes a much higher ratio of omega-6 to Omega-3 than they should, between 10:1 and 50:1, with an average of 15:1.

One of the best ways to get enough omega-3 in one's diet is to consume the fat of certain types of fish and marine animals. Certain nuts and seeds can also be consumed to increase omega-3 but usually they contain a lot more omega-6, with the exception of Chia and Flax seeds.

Fish and marine animals on the other hand often contain a very high amount of omega-3. This includes salmon, lobster, and canned tuna in water. However, one of the best and often overlooked sources of omega-3 is seal oil.

First of all, seal oil contains around 7.5 times more omega-3 than omega-6, which is really good. Secondly, research from Memorial University of Newfoundland has shown that seal oil is more optimal for human health as it is more readily digested and absorbed since it is a mammal source.
